If you are asked what is the difference between a human being and an animal? Surely you will say that there is humanity within a human being. He knows what is good and bad. But animals do not realize this. In such a situation, if we start considering animals as our close friends, then it will definitely be a big mistake. However, despite this, there are many people who roam around keeping everything from snakes to lions as pets. Generally these animals are loyal to their owners. But sometimes they do not desist from attacking. Something similar happened with 70 year old Leon van Biljon, who was known as ‘Lion Man’. When Leon bought and raised three lion cubs, he treated them as his “children.” But those lions took his life.
The story of 70-year-old Leon, popularly known as “Lion Man” is going viral on social media. Leon believed he had formed a bond with two male lions, Rambo, Nakita, and lioness Katrin. When he was young, he would often sleep in his enclosure. But years later a fatal mistake led to his downfall and proved that big cats always act according to natural instincts. It is said that Lyon had opened the Mahala View Lion Game Lodge in Hammanskraal, just north of Pretoria, South Africa, for these lions. In the year 2019, when he went to the lions’ enclosure to put up a fence, the lions attacked him. His back was towards the back. Emergency services were called to save them. But they could not help Leon immediately. Lions, drenched in blood, were surrounded from all sides.
In such a situation, the lions had to be shot, only after that the doctors could reach there and try to treat them. But by then it was too late, he had succumbed to his wounds. A source at the lodge revealed the horrific incident at the time, saying that Lyon had gone to fix the fence, but knew the lions well and while he was fixing the fence, he turned his back and A lion came from behind and caught his neck. Following his death, Lyon’s family said he was “at peace” and “left this earth for the sake of his children”, Pretoria News reported. His daughter Lyonette Van Wyk said she knew her father lived a good life and that he accepted God’s calling to raise lions and teach people more about them.
Lyonette said that we built that lion farm from scratch and grew up there. My father had tamed lions. He used to sleep with them. But this accident happened. According to Mahala View’s website, Lyon offered lion lectures, meals and game drives for guests. It was reported that before the tragedy he had planned to retire and sell the gaming lodge. Recently, when this story resurfaced on YouTube, many people came forward to express their views. Commenting, one wrote: “No matter how long you ‘train’ them, no matter how hard you try to tame them, just one flip of the switch will trigger their wild instincts and “The consequences will often be fatal.” Another said, “This teaches us that no matter what wild animal you own or keep, they let their nature take over.”
